The yellow spice that gives curry its vibrant color can also imbue your skin with a gorgeous glow. In other words, it's time to feed your face with a touch of turmeric.
Here are some surefire ways to spice up your beauty routine.
Before diving into a deluge of DIY recipes or giving you a run-down of our favorite skincare products that contain turmeric, let's spend a minute learning about this little gift from nature.
Turmeric can take your skin to the next level. There are centuries of experience with the spice to support that statement, along with several scientific studies.
Curcumin is a chemical compound found in turmeric, which is a spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa. Curcumin fortifies cells against such things as lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial permeability transition.
In other - less technical - words, it has been shown to have anti-aging characteristics.
Curcumin can counter or postpone cell senescence, which is when cell division has ceased. Cellular senescence is associated with many age-related diseases, so this can be a good thing in such cases.
This helps explain why putting turmeric powder in a face mask recipe or using a product with turmeric can help rejuvenate the skin.
Turmeric not only slows down cell damage, but is high in antioxidants. This helps with evening out your skin tone. It also adds a bit of brightness and helps clarify your complexion. Many have also noted turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties.
#2. Try a turmeric face mask to refresh and revitalize
Given the aforementioned ways that turmeric can positively affect skin health, why not incorporate it into your skincare routine?
If you're hoping to slow down the aging process and gently push back against some of those changes Mother Nature insists on making, turmeric can be an important tool to have in your toolkit.
You'll be delighted by the difference that a product like JUARA Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask will make.
While we can't quite turn back time, you will see a blast from the past (AKA a more refreshed-looking face reminiscent of your former self) after using this mask. It does a stellar job at skin brightening while purifying pores and enhancing your natural glow.
The Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask really revs up the skin's radiance as it provides a refresher for the face. It brings all the benefits of a clay mask, minus the hardening and cracking that can dry out the skin and strip it of its natural oils.
Inspired by the "Lulur Ritual" Indonesian spa treatment, this mask takes the best of what has stood the test of time and incorporates ingredients that are scientifically proven to improve skin.
The Kaolin clay clarifies the complexion, while candlenut oil delivers those essential Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that penetrate the surface to moisturize dry and depleted skin. (We can't say enough about candlenut oil being the best body oil out there.)
It's suitable for all skin types, even those folks with sensitive skin. You can use it up to three times a week. Simply apply it over clean skin, leave on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water.
If you prefer, you can also leave it on your skin overnight. Whichever way you choose to use it, this mask makes for one of the more rejuvenating turmeric skin treatments out there.
#3. Get a mega-dose of moisture from a face mask with turmeric
Turmeric face masks come in varied forms and formulas that address different skin issues. Since turmeric powder plays an important part in everything from fighting acne to decreasing the appearance of dark circles, it's important to look at a product's full list of ingredients to see if it's a match for you.
Because the Java Plum Avocado Nourishing Mask by JUARA also contains avocado oil, java plum, banana, and mango, it saturates the skin with moisture and makes the surface super smooth.
These beautifying botanicals deliver lipids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and more. The presence of polyphenol in this formula means more youthful-looking skin since it pushes back against several early signs of aging - as does our anti aging hand cream.
If dry skin is getting you down, do yourself a favor and make this mask part of your new nighttime beauty ritual. Smooth this product over your face and neck for a calming experience and complete skin nourishment. It doesn't even need to be rinsed off.
You'll sleep in peace as your skin absorbs all the goodness.
A good night's rest along with all these vitamins and minerals will give you a rested and refreshed look when you awake.
Like our other JUARA turmeric face mask, you can apply it one to three times per week. With repeated use, this mask will help strengthen your skin's natural moisture barrier. That means goodbye to skin that's dry.
#4. Use turmeric beauty treatments to address certain skin concerns
Many folks have shared that a turmeric face pack or turmeric powder in a DIY mask improved their problems with acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
This may be for a few different reasons. First off, theanti-inflammatory properties of turmeric speed along the process of wound healing. It lowers the body's response to cutaneous wounds so healing happens more rapidly.
In addition, some studies suggest that turmeric has a positive impact on tissue and collagen. This, of course, means good things for several skin conditions.
Both the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric may alleviate some symptoms of psoriasis. Products with turmeric can help control flare-ups, for example.
If you have or had acne-prone skin, a turmeric face mask may be in order.
Turmeric is known for its ability to help reduce acne scars and other types of scarring. The anti-inflammatory qualities can calm your skin.
Turmeric's antioxidant and antibacterial properties also promote clear skin. Acne breakouts are commonly caused by the prevalent bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). Turmeric can help keep that bacteria and excess oil in check.
You may notice that some turmeric face mask recipes will have you mix turmeric powder with apple cider vinegar for additional bacteria-fighting power. Apple cider vinegar also has anti-fungal properties.
Natural ingredients like these have helped generation after generation with a whole host of issues. A turmeric face pack can help those with oily skin types fight acne, bring moisture where needed, and brighten skin all over.
#5. Start using a serum to strengthen your skin's defense system
It lightens skin where there may be issues with hyperpigmentation or dark patches, and even addresses dark circles under the eyes.
A clinical study showed impressive results across the board, with trial participants reporting significant improvement in skin tone, texture, and tightness after just four weeks.
This serum seriously replenishes skin. A wide array of plant-based ingredients play an important role in this revitalizing serum.
In addition to turmeric, our radiance complex consists of clove flower, which has a brightening effect similar to lemon juice with its high levels of vitamin C. It also contains goji to work away at wrinkles, sea algae for added moisture, a special palm peptide for skin elasticity, and several other extracts that equal glowing skin in the end.
This youth-boosting serum helps fight free-radical damage and inflammation, as it calms stressed skin.
All you need to do is dispense one pump (or two pumps if you're planning to apply it on your neck) and gently smooth it over fresh, clean skin. This should come after toner, and before moisturizer. Be sure to allow the serum to be absorbed before you move on to that moisturizing step.
This blend is alcohol-free and fragrance-free, making it extra gentle for sensitive skin.
#6. Make a DIY face pack using one of these turmeric mask recipes
If you're excited to incorporate turmeric into your skincare regimen, we've provided some optimal options above. Some people like to try a little out first before committing to a new ingredient, so if you're an industrious type who loves a DIY project, try your hand at one of these recipes below.
Whenever introducing new ingredients to your skin, you will want to do a quick patch test to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction.
Turmeric powder & lemon juice
Turmeric powder mixed with lemon juice can help those who deal with discoloration by lightening pigmentation and evening out skin tone. It's also great for people battling blemishes because the citric acid in lemon juice helps with exfoliation.
To make this mask you'll need:
1 tbsp. Turmeric
¼ cup. Lemon Juice (add a few drops more to make a paste that's easily spread)
Add lemon juice to the turmeric and blend until you have a smooth paste. Then, simply apply the paste evenly to your face, avoiding the eyes.
Leave it on for no more than 20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. Any DIY mask with turmeric tends to have a higher concentration of the spice than most skincare products, so you don't want to leave it on too long.
While our JUARA masks are safe to leave on overnight, if you are making your own turmeric face mask, it may cause a slight stain. If you forget to set a timer and fall asleep with it on, you could awake to see your skin yellow (especially if you happen to have lighter skin).
So if you don't want to look like a Simpsons character, keep your eyes on the clock.
If you do accidentally stain the skin, you can remove it with a natural blend of botanicals and essential oils. An oil like almond oil or olive oil and something like a citrus essential oil could do the trick. If that doesn't work, you may need to follow up with an oatmeal or coffee exfoliation mix.
Turmeric, milk, & honey face mask
This next face mask recipe contains turmeric (of course), as well as milk and honey. As with most turmeric masks, it's great for addressing acne. It will work with any skin type and give you a more vibrant visage.
Milk has lactic acid, which contains alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). These chemically dissolve the bonds that hold skin cells together. When dirt, oils, and dead skin cells are cleared away, a path is made for younger, fresher cells to make their way to the surface.
Honey, an antioxidant, helps to fight free radicals (those darn ne'er-do-wells) and also brings heaps of hydration. As a result, you'll most likely notice smooth, supple, clear skin.
To make this mask you'll need:
1 tbsp. turmeric
1 ½ tablespoons of honey
½ tablespoon of whole milk
Add turmeric, honey, and milk to a bowl and make a paste by stirring the ingredients together. Then, use a makeup brush to apply it evenly over your face.
Sit back and relax for 15 minutes, and then rinse off the mask. You can continue your DIY natural skincare ritual and follow the mask up with a mix of olive oil and aloe vera gel, which makes for a simple, natural moisturizer.
Coconut oil & turmeric face mask
This turmeric face pack with coconut oil and turmeric is great for several skin conditions since both have antifungal properties.
Coconut oil also happens to be a very effective emollient that softens and moisturizes the skin. This recipe can also help reduce redness and do away with pesky dry patches.
To make this mask you'll need:
1 tbsp. turmeric
1 ½ tablespoons coconut oil
Mix turmeric powder with the coconut oil and apply on your face. Again, it's best to use a brush to avoid having it on your hands. You can spot-treat dry patches if you desire.
After 15 minutes, remove the mix with a wet, warm washcloth to reveal a more radiant YOU.
For one more turmeric face mask recipe, check out this video below. As noted above (and in the video), this spice can stain clothes, towels, and even your face, so take the needed precautions. That's another reason why professionally formulated serums and masks may be the better choice when it comes to trying turmeric.
