Oh…Goji! Bless you – A Recipe for the Flu.

Ever heard of the ancient and famed Asian berry called the Goji Berry? Originally from China, these small, bright, orange-red colored berries (also known as wolfberries) are consumed all through Southeast Asia and now the west-  known as a superfruit. They look like dried cranberry “kernels” if one were to exist, but they are known for its healing benefits – often consumed in soups, wines, and beverages for health and longevity for centuries.

Vitamin Packed

Like most colorful berries, the Goji Berry is packed full of anti-oxidants, which helps your body stay strong as it fights against free radicals, due to its high oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC).  However, these little tasty ancient fruits are also rich in compounds which contain Vitamin A and C, ad a whopping 13 and 9% of your daily serving in each ounce – which is great for immune system and overall cell health.

Preliminary Studies

Preliminary studies have shown tests on elder male mice who were fed (thankfully good-for-you!) goji berries for 30 days compared to mice who were not – and both groups were given a flu vaccine. Results showed the mice who had been fed a diet with goji berries showed a higher antibody response, hence a better response to the flu vaccine.

Drink Recipe for the Flu

I, unfortunately, did not manage to avoid the flu this season, so while I was bundled up at home, I turned to this home-remedy, combining my own ancient heritage – and some western goodness for a feel-good healthy drink to get me through the ickiness of the flu!

1 teaspoon Goji Berries
1/8 teaspoon of liquid Red Ginseng (optional – but supercharges your drink!)
1 heaping teaspoon of Manuka Honey
Soy Milk (or other nut milk of choice)
Hot Water

Fill the cup with the dried goji berries and boiling water until 1/2 way full. Wait 5 minutes for the goji berries to soften. Stir in the ginseng, honey, and then add soy milk till the cup is full. Let steep for 1-2 more minutes, then enjoy!
