Summer Readiness – Here We Come.

Summer is the season for sunshine!  With beaches, dining al fresco, summer fridays (read: buh-bye office walls!), and generally being outdoors, you can easily be more prepared than you realize! You’ve heard repeatedly to never leave the house without sunblock, reapply several times a day (as its effectiveness reduces with light exposure, or just from coming off from sweat/daily activities), but there’s a few extra tricks up our sleeve to keep your skin summer fresh and healthy. Being inspired by Indonesia, a tropical country with sun all year round, JUARA knows what a doozy rays near the equator, eternal sun and humidity can do, so here’s our faves to tackle common sun related skin situations!

SUNBURN RESCUE:

Oops. Didn’t we say slather up the SPF? Well, it happens to the best of us… the sunburn. Sunburns are caused when skin is overexposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays and can happen in as little as 15 minutes, but can take 2-6 hours for the symptoms to appear. Some symptoms of mild sunburn include redness and tenderness, and for that, our Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner is a great skin soothing treatment. It contains rice bran extract, which specifically reduces redness and irritation, hyaluronic acid and tamarind see extract to moisturize and cool – without oil or alcohol, and triple tea extracts packed with anti0xidants. It really is instant relief. (For serious symptoms including blistering, fever, chills and nausea, we suggest going to the doctor!)

GREASE BE GONE:

Does summer weather and humidity put your skin into a tizzy? Does your skin range from “well, it’s rather shiny” to “a greasy mess?” Our Sweet Black Tea & Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer is oil-free, yet contains Kombucha, our anti-aging fermented black tea complex, plus ginger and cinnamon that reduces sebum production. This means the moisturizer does not only reduce oil-induced shine at the moment, but it also means that the more time you use it over, the less “shiny” your skin will naturally become!

Sweet Black Tea & Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer

Another anti-shine darling? Our Clove Flower & Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum. Also with our Turmeric infused Radiance Complex, this oil-free serum serves as excellent hydration with seaweed, while containing skin firming ingredients including palm peptides, clove flower, and goji berries. Like an exotic fruit cocktail for your face – just less messy, and way more immediate in its firming, skin-smoothing results!

POST-SUN RESET AND REFRESH:

Once you’ve been exposed to a day of rays, it’s always good to refresh and rejuvinate your skin! Counter sun, travel, or pollution exposure with our Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask, which contains our potent Turmeric extract which neutralizes free radicals and brightens for a healthy “I am so HEALTHY!” glow. And we like to get our sexy natural radiance on – ready for the next day. This mask also contains Kaolin Clay is blended with Candlenut Oil to purify skin, absorbing impurities, while also keeping it moist and not overdried. Great for all skin types, just make sure you take it off when you leave the house because it just feels THAT GOOD on after 10 minutes! (Or just do what we do for a super treatment – apply a thin layer and leave on overnight. Wake up to the morning glow. Literally.)

And of course, we remind you to stay hydrated, make sure your sunglasses have a UV filter on them, try out a sun parasol if you’re feeling particularly stylish like some do in Asia, and keep smiling! Got any sun tips to share? We’d love to hear it!

All Weather Skincare – Behold!

I love the thought of all-terrain wear, like that windbreaker you take when it’s rainy, chilly or warm as a care-all layer, or the thin, big scarf you can bring to spruce up any outfit, while keeping yourself warm as needed. Perhaps it’s because as a traveling business owner I move around a lot, but I love multi-tasking items that can help me navigate through my everyday, preparing me for whatever is to come. From bouncing from tropical weather Indonesia to all-sorts-from-snowy-dry-to-hot-and-humid NY, I have to always be ready – so here’s my favorite weather-proof basic skincare from our own JUARA collection. (I can’t live without these!) You can always add more products, (like the moisturizer of choice,) but these are what I consider the most weather neutral essentials for all weather terrain!

JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser:

With its sulfate free cleansing agents, our new, greener, PEG-free formulations are gentle, remove makeup and leave a really soft after feel without stripping. This means for humid climates I get a nice clean without feeling stripped, which is perfect so it stays balanced without over producing oil to compensate. Interestingly enough, the same logic applies for dry weather, because that’s the last kind of weather where you want to strip your skin and render it more sensitive to the elements!

JUARA Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner:

I love this one because it swings both ways – as a hydrating toner in most climates to be applied before the moisturizer thereby improving moisturizer performance by sealing in this extra layer of moisture, or to be used solo – as THE moisturizer in more humid climates. I have often just used this alcohol free, water loving hyaluronic acid enriched toner solo and either skipped the moisturizer, or used a smidgen, just to have a thin layer on my skin as the humid weather substitutes as my moisturizer, keeping me hydrated. The tamarind seed extract is a chock full of oil-free moisture, Plus, no greasy after feel! AND if you’re in hot weather and give yourself a sunburn, this toner is a great skin-calmer, redness-reducing savior as the rice bran extract in it has properties to soothe and calm skin from inflammation and redness… which conveniently enough is also perfect for the drying cold wind of winter.

JUARA Clove & Flower Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum:

This firming and hydrating serum is PERFECT for all weathers. You do have to put a moisturizer over it, but the amount varies by climate. Alone, this oil-free serum helps tighten skin on application, and over time, the turmeric brightens the skin while the palm peptides and goji berry work to improve and even out skin tone and increase firm skin. The best part is it feels like a skin-shield – no matter how tired or sick I am, this serum helps me look awake and fresh!

JUARA Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask

I LOVE our masks. They’re like the “apply, fuggedaboutit, come back later and voila, see a difference” easy to use products. The Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask takes about a minute to apply, contains kaolin clay to purify and remove dirt in the pores but also candlenut oils to make sure it doesn’t dry out your skin. Plus, the turmeric is a naturally strong antioxidant to detox skin and also brighten – so it’s like 2o minutes to an instant glow, or apply a thin layer to leave overnight and in the AM it looks like you just slept like sleeping beauty – glowing and radiant.

Sleeping Beauty: The Do’s and Don’ts of Skin Saving Slumber

Written by Amber Lester

Sleeping Beauty…

You may think that you have heard it all before, how important “beauty sleep” is and about getting seven to eight hours of per night blah blah blah. Maybe your schedule doesn’t allow you a super long night’s rest or you’re a night owl or early bird. Many of us just can’t get in the recommended amount of sleep, and feeling tired all day is definitely no fun.

But did you know that the sleeping position you choose can trick your body into feeling like it has gotten way more sleep than it has? So, stop counting sheep and try out these different sleep positions!

The Cold Hard Truth

Here at Juara we promise you the truth and nothing but the truth, so here it is: getting a good night’s rest is pivotal for not only our skin, but your health, mental state, and mood (you don’t want to be asked if “you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.”) According to the National Sleep Foundation, getting the recommended dosage of sleep is easier said than done, and can be a challenge from a number of things including eating or drinking the wrong things before bed. Dr. Hooman Melamed, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the DISC Sports and Spine Center in Los Angeles, California, has said that about eighty percent of the population will experience back problems at some point in their life which can be caused by the way they sleep.

Below we have put together a list of the best and worst sleeping positions to help you optimize your hours of beauty sleep to stay healthy.

Your PM  Poses

1. On your back

Sleeping on your back makes it easier on the head, neck, and spine. This position aligns the body straight, keeping it in a neutral position. It is better to sleep without a pillow when sleeping on your back so that the facial muscles can relax. If you keep sleeping on your back facial wrinkles can gradually fade.

2.  Starfish

Another good position for your back, and prevents facial wrinkles and skin breakouts. Research has also proven that sleeping on your back can combat acid reflux. In the starfish position, you are lying on your back with both arms around the pillow. It is important to note that this position can cause snoring!

3. On your side

Sleeping on your side is the second best position and especially beneficial for those who have sleep apnea. Sleeping on your side opens up the oropharynx and elongates the spine to alleviate back pain (please include source and source link). However, there is a good and bad to everything! Side sleeping could lead to unwanted skin aging since placing one side of your face on the pillow can cause wrinkles, and could even lead to the breasts sagging quicker (and we definitely don’t want that!). If you are already a side sleeper and experience have back pain, try placing a pillow in between the knees to help alleviate pressure.

Your PM  Pose-Nots (aka the worst sleeping positions)

1. On your stomach

Sleeping on your stomach is not advisable since it does not support the natural curve of the spine and can lead to overarching. When you sleep on your stomach, there is added pressure to your joints and numbness resulting in pain.

2. The fetal position

It may seem like the most comfortable but sleeping on your sides with you knees drawn up to your chest can lead to neck/ back pain, sleep lines, and wrinkles. Whenever you sleep on your side, the side or front of your facial skin will be pulled or stretched. If you are sleeping on a high pillow, your head is slightly down and a double-chin gradually appears after a long time.

The Bottom Line

You sleep with your whole body, and the position you choose affects everything from sleep quality to premature aging. Sleeping positions are greatly related to Your skin (and body’s) metabolism is regulated at night, so making sure you get enough beauty sleep really does impact your beauty!

5 Trends You Need To Try This Fall

PSLIt’s officially fall.

Sweater weather is here, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is back at Starbucks, and the leaves on the trees are changing over to a crisp orange and red. Before we have to break out the parkas and PSLs turn into Gingerbread Frappacinos, here are 5 fall must-try trends:

1. DRY BODY BRUSHING

Benefits

  • Detoxifies
  • Reduces Cellulite
  • Boosts Circulation
  • Improves Skin Texture & Elasticity
  • Increases Lymphatic Drainage

How To

Before bathing, take a dry shower brush and start from the top of the feet, rotating the brush in a circular motion. Continue to move upwards towards the heart using long motions. Spend extra time on problem areas and do not forget your back, tummy, and the back of your arms!

Recommended Use

2x / week

2. COFFEE SCRUBBING

InvigoratingCoffeeScrub (4)

  • Exfoliates Leaving Skin Silky Smooth
  • Combats Cellulite
  • Improves Circulation

A twist to your morning coffee, coffee scrubs are full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. The exfoliation when scrubbing will help to improve blood flow throughout the body, helping to break down fat cells and expel toxins. The Juara Invigorating Coffee Scrub is infused with Indonesian coffee beans – providing an instant pick me up with its java scent.

3. OIL PULLING

Sun Kissed Skin – Your Fall Fashion Staple

5373781376_9aedb55267_z

That gorgeous beach glow.

I think it’s my favorite summer accessory. The light smattering of freckles that appears on my lightly (read: LIGHTLY) tanned skin after a day at the beach with some SPF 50.

As soon as that tan starts to fade in mid-late September, the carefree breeziness of summer seems to fade too. The air gets crisp, sweaters come out, the sun sets earlier, and chilled apple martinis get traded out for hot apple cider.

BUT with the onset of amazing self tanning products – products that don’t leave you pumpkin colored and smelling faintly of a freshly painted garage – it’s possible to keep that summer glow glowing all fall long.

So here is our fall guide to sunless tanning greatness.

1. Exfoliate Before Tanning

Exfoliation is a crucial part of self-tanning and something that most people ignore. Those blotchy patches of brown/orange that have burned you (buh dum ching) in the past are actually areas of dry, uneven skin that have stained more than the rest of your even, hydrated skin. It’s a fact that self-tan applies better on fresh and revitalized skin.

To keep these blotchy patches from ruining your day, we recommend JUARA’s Candlenut Body Polish. The unique properties of this scrub provide both hydration and exfoliation… and can be used almost immediately before applying self tanner.

2. Double Hydrate The Creases

Knees, elbows, ankles, fingers and toes are the devil of self- tanning. After scrubbing your whole body down the the Candlenut Body Polish, add an extra level of hydration to those problem areas with JUARA’s Candlenut Body Creme to keep color from settling in places you don’t want it to.

3. Follow Directions

You may think you’re the queen of self tanning and there’s nothing on the back of that bottle you don’t already know, but every product is DIFFERENT. Some say to apply with your bare hands, some have an applicator mitt (like my favorite St. Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse), some are ok for face, some aren’t, some say to shower 2-3 hours after application, some say not to shower for 24 hours. You get the point. Make sure you take a moment to read the instructions so that you know you’re doing the right thing.

4. And If You Make A Mistake…

It’s correctable! Pour lemon juice onto a cotton swab and dab the area. Every product is different, but generally you can re-apply when it starts fading. If you get a patch attack over time (like on day 4 when things are starting to fade) follow the same rules as above and you’ll have a great tan again in no time!

Get glowing, JUARA Ladies!

Say Goodbye to Oily Skin

Do you have oily skin?

Maybe you do. Or maybe you only have oiliness in your T-Zone… or your nose starts out matte and by the end of the day looks like it’s been dipped in lacquer. If you have any of these skin experiences on the regular, I feel you. But what can we do about it?

First of all, why do we get ‘oily skin’? Well, the sebaceous glands in your skin produce oil all day and all night to keep your skin nourished – that is their job. Did you know that the drier your skin is, the more oil you will produce? SO that means keeping your skin well HYDRATED is the key to stopping oily skin in its tracks. Kind of counterintuitive…

So how do I keep my skin matte and gorgeous all day long?

Excellent question. Let’s start with the basics.

Step 1. Wash Gently

A common mistake is washing your skin with a harsh cleanser at the beginning of the day in hopes that this will keep the oil at bay. It will only prompt your sebaceous glands to produce even more oil. Stick to a soap-free gentle cleanser like the JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser or some good old fashioned Coconut Oil.

Step 2. NO Alcohol

If you like using a toner, that’s fine. Just read the label carefully to ensure that your toner is alcohol-free. Not sure where to find an alcohol-free toner? Check out JUARA’s Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner.

Step 3. Spot Moisturize

If your skin is oily all over, that’s an easy fix. Follow the above rules and finish up with a mattefying moisturizer that contains humectants like hyaluronic acid to keep skin properly hydrated without adding oil, e.g. JUARA’s Sweet Black Tea & Ginger Oil-Free Moisturizer.

Things become tricky when you’re T-Zone oily or oily only on your nose and extremely dry elsewhere. If this is the case for your complexion, you’re going to need to treat your moisturizer like a spot-treatment. Use an oil-free where your skin gets slick throughout the day and use a super hydrating moisturizer (the Laurel Whole Plant Organics Facial Balm is one of my favorites for super intense moisture) on areas where skin is dry and flaky.

Step 4. CC Powder + UV is your best friend

For a flawless, matte finish, that ALSO provides sun protection that you are probably missing from your moisturizer routine finish off with a CC Powder aka Airbrush Powder aka MAGIC Powder. My favorite is the CC+ Airbrush Perfecting Powder by It Cosmetics.

Give Yourself a Stress Check

 iStock_000016155604_Full

This week is national stress buster week, and boy do I need a stress check.

Do you ever wake up at 5am in a panic thinking that it’s 9:30 and your alarm didn’t go off and you overslept and missed a meeting? That’s been happening to me the past few days, which means I need a SERIOUS stress detox.

Stress is like a pimple on the back of your neck. You kind of feel it when it starts, and over the next week it grows and grows until one day you’re wearing your hair up in a ponytail and your best friend looks at you and goes “OMG what is that on the back of your neck??? It’s really infected!”

And at that point you just have to pop it. Pop it, disinfect it and allow your skin to heal.

So this week, it’s time to pop your stress pimple, detox your life and allow your anxiety-ridden brain to heal.

Here are the three stress busters I’m implementing to help me chill the hell out this week:

1. Buy An Alarm Clock

tictac

My morning ritual goes something like this: wake up in a panic at 5:30 thinking my alarm didn’t go off, check my phone, think “it’s only 5:30, phew”, proceed to check my email JUST INCASE someone sent something important between the hours of midnight and 5:30am, put my phone back in the charger, roll over and go back to sleep, repeat twice more until my alarm goes off (reliably) at 7:45am.

Instead of relying on my phone to wake me up, I’ve decided to buy an alarm clock. By putting the clock next to my bed, I can quickly glance up and realize that it is in fact only 5:30am and proceed to go back to sleep. Keeping my alarm separate from my phone also reduces the temptation to check email in the middle of the night or from bed first thing in the morning. It also allows you to turn your phone off (read, OFF as in powered down) overnight which 1. keeps your sleep from being disturbed by constant buzzing and dinging in the middle of the night and 2. gives your phone a rest… because electronic devices deserve sleep too.

2. No Email Before 9am or After 7pm

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 5.37.52 PM

In this world of constant communication, everything has become an ’emergency’ and if you don’t answer NOW the world is going to fall apart. Let’s all take a step back, breathe, and realize that if someone sends you an email at 11pm, it PROBABLY isn’t actionable until 9am the following day anyway. So why do we all drive ourselves crazy and leave our email notifications on all night? Turn that stuff off when you go home, and you’ll feel far more refreshed and ready to tackle the day when you get into the office in the morning. I promise.

3. Take A Lunch Break Every Day

4780627923_fb3ed6dde0_b

I am a serial lunch-at-desk crime committer. Every day I walk outside for 5-10 minutes to grab my food and then immediately come back to my desk to continue working. I don’t know why I feel that this is necessary… I am clearly allowed a lunch but I just don’t take it. And neither does anyone else I know! WE ARE ALL CRAZY. If you have an hour for lunch, take that hour to do things for you. Eat outside, run errands, watch funny videos online, call your mom… just do anything other than work. It’s important to set boundaries for yourself to maintain a healthy work-life balance. And eating lunch at a normal, human pace is a good start.

What stress busters will you try out this week?
