Turmeric Bioavailability – Easy tricks to maximize its benefits

Turmeric is a key ingredient in Jamu, the ancient Indonesian herbal medicine.  Since the scientific community in European and American started taking an interest in this rhizome in the last 20th century, Turmeric has become one of the most studied herbs.  The key nutrient in Turmeric that has been shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and potential anti-cancer properties is Curcumin.  Unfortunately, the health benefits of Curcumin when ingested, cannot be fully realized because if poor bioavailability, meaning that Curcumin is quickly broken down and metabolized by the liver and intestinal walls before it can work its magic where needed.

The good news is that there are simple tricks to improve Curcumin’s bioavailability – tricks that can be done daily and easily as part of your regular diet:

1.Mix it with fat

Curcumin is fat soluble.  By combining or dissolving it with a fat, it is better absorbed into the bloodstream (1).  It’s easy:  Combine Turmeric with a heart-healthy oil in a vegetable stir fry.  Or add it to your smoothie together with coconut milk or full-fat kefir.

2.  Fresh Turmeric vs. dried Turmeric

Dried Turmeric powder is more widely available than the fresh rhizome, but fresh Turmeric actually has better “built-in” bioavailability (2) because is about 10% fat content.

3.  Heat it up

Bioavailability of Curcuma is even further improved, when Turmeric is lightly heated in oil (3), which is why Turmeric is ideal to incorporate into your daily cooking, whether it is a stir fry or a curry sauce.

4.  Add a dash of Black Pepper

Black pepper contains piperine, which blocks the body from rapidly metabolizing Curcumin.  In fact, consuming fresh black pepper together with Turmeric, can improve bioavailability of Curcumin by 2000% (4).

5.  Combine it with Quercetin-rich fruits & vegetables

Quercetin is an antioxidant that gives certain fruits and vegetables their dark, blue-ish color.  Research shows that Quercetin blocks an enzyme that would metabolizes Curcumin, thus making it more bioavailable (5).  Quercetin-rich foods include blueberries, red grapes, red onions, green tea but also red apples.

In Skincare – Proven Effective

Turmeric has a long tradition in Indonesian beauty rituals as well, most famously in the Lulur bridal spa treatment.  While it is an age old recipe to boost skin radiance and luminosity, there is a growing body of recent scientific evidence that underscores topical Turmeric’s benefits in helping prevent and reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, acne, and signs of premature aging such as irregular skin tone and sun damage.  When we at JUARA craft formulations, we draw our inspiration from Indonesian tradition, but we also ensure that we select botanicals that have been tested for efficacy and safety according to today’s standards.

Several of JUARA products are formulated with Turmeric, including our

Clove Flower & Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum, Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask, Radiance Vitality Oil, Sweet Black Tea & Rice Moisturizer and Miracle Tea Complete Eye Creme, but also in body treatments such as our Kartini Body Oil.

Body Shaping Ginger – Eat it up or Massage it in!

When winter holiday cheer arrives, the weight gain blues often follow. Did you know that January 2nd is often the fattest day of the average American – gaining an average of 5-10 pounds over the lovely holidays? Who can help it? – less outdoor time, hearty meals with desserts, (oh, desserts!) and shorter sun-filled days inducing sleepy appetite gains. Good news though, the good earth has blessed us with slimming GINGER filled with powerhouse anti-inflammatory gingerols. Although the weight gain is a natural byproduct of the seasons, and we tend to lose most of it once spring arrives, having a little help along the way in the form of ginger certainly doesn’t hurt.

EAT IT UP

One research study showed that the consumption of just 2 grams of ginger (1 teaspoon of ground ginger) a day for 12 weeks significantly decreased body mass index (BMI) (1). And this was a gold standard human, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study. Not a BMI fan, ginger was also shown in gold standard meta-analyses to significantly decrease weight loss. (2) Yay- support for the idea that consumption of a simple natural earth provided ingredient can make a change. Ginger tea for winter, yum AND easy! Even the powder works, not just the fresh root. Plus, ginger helps to ease that indigestion we all get from too much holiday food by helping to empty the stomach faster. (3)

MASSAGE IT IN

Ginger is a major Jamu ingredient. And that traditional use for its well known benefits, is now supported by science, not just for ingestion, but topically too. JUARA’s Ginger Coffee Firming Treatment smooths and firms orange peel thighs, post baby stretch marks, and flabby underarm wings. Although I always remind my children (and myself) that beauty is who you are, not how you look, a little help from ginger never hurts.

This winter, I have a plan – 1 teaspoon of ground ginger tea a day, and Coffee Ginger Firming Treatment for …pretty much, all over!

UV Radiation Primer with 6 Easy Sun Protection Tips

Is that another sunspot on my 3 year old daughter’s face?!? We put sunscreen on her face everyday, but yes, I skip a day or two when we are rushing out the door. Pool season is here, and I have been a BAD mother. I have not properly shielded her from a life of wrinkles, saggy, rough and dull skin! Another thing for her to blame me for when she becomes eighteen. Thankfully, my non-paranoid rational brain kicks in and reminds me that it never hurts to freshen up on UV radiation and how to protect oneself from the sun.

UVA/UVB Primer

Big picture reference: UV Radiation is shorter wavelength than visible light (700-400nm) in the electromagnetic (light) spectrum.

UVA I (340-400nm) and UVA II (320-340nm) together make up 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the earth’s surface, where we humans live. UVA is present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours, throughout the day, and can penetrate clouds and glass. Wait, I spend more hours in the car than I would care to discuss, and UVA penetrates glass. Plus, windows of cars do NOT have UV protective film. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB, to the dermis (skin photo-aging and wrinkles!), but does some dirty work in the epidermis layer above the dermis where it damages skin cells in the basal layer – basal, squamous, and melanocyte.

UVB (290-320nm) varies by season, location, weather, and time of day. In the northern hemisphere, significant UVB rays only make it through from about 10am to 4pm, October(ish) til March(ish), depending on what city you are in. UVB is the only ray that makes vitamin D. But to get the right amount, it has to be between those months and times on sunny days, full body exposure for about 15 minutes, depending on your skin color, age, etc. UVB tends to damage skin more superficially in the epidermis, and cause reddening and sunburn. This can be throughout the year, even with cloud cover. But bright side, UVB doesn’t really make it through glass!

Both UVA and UVB rays can have an 80% bounce rate on reflective snow, water, or ice! That’s almost double the damage! Both rays can damage and age your skin and eyes resulting in wrinkles, sagging, thinning skin, or cataracts. On the good side, both rays can be blocked or absorbed by protective clothing, hats, or the appropriate sunscreen protection, and sunglasses. We usually do these, but sometimes we forget!

Protection is Key! Make it Easy and a Habit!

  • Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen everyday, or most days
  • Long sleeves unless it’s 90F out
  • Broad-brimmed hat when we spend time outdoors
  • But wait, I realized I had not factored in the amount of time we spend in the car. So today, I booked an appointment to get UV blocking film applied to my four door car, about $300, but lifetime warranty!
  • UV blocking Sunglasses- not the cheap kind. Get one from a reputed store. A tinted lens is not the same as a UV blocking lens.
  • And the clincher – placement of the sun accessories by the door with a mirror, especially if you have children. Visual cue to start the sun protection habit.

Do you have any additional ideas on sun protection? Please share! I need all the help I can get.

A UV primer only gets you so far. Next up, I have to dig deep and consider whether to sacrifice sun protection for Vitamin D (there’s a whole host of research on why vitamin D is great for you!) and find out more about how UV rays affect the skin and eyes. Then ingredients that block and absorb, clothing that protects – SPF and UPF…. Anything else you can think of so I can learn more to keep my daughters’ skin healthy and dewy? And mine as well!

Why Ginger Can Help You Lose Weight PLUS a Lemongrass Ginger Tea Recipe

by JUARA Co-Founder Yoshiko Roth-Hidalgo

Losing, or at least not gaining weight, is hard for most of us. While there is no magic bullet, the good news is that nature has a lot of the answers.  Movement, fresh foods, fresh air, sleep, mindfulness… For most of us, it’s the good old basics that are the foundation for a healthy weight.  And it is also nature that provides us with “tricks” to help us along the way.  Ginger is one of nature’s brilliant “tricks”.  Humans have used ginger for thousands of years.  In Jamu, Indonesia’s traditional herbal medicine, ginger is one of the most revered staples for a healthy metabolism and immune system  Here is why it helps with weight management. It works!

Ginger Boosts Your Metabolism

Ginger is a spice.  If you notice how your belly gets warm after eating ginger, it’s not your imagination.  Ginger warms the body because it increases your metabolism, which is crucial for loosing weight and maintaining it.

Ginger Suppresses Your Appetite and Increases Satiety

A study by the New York Obesity Research Center and Columbia University showed that participants that consumed ginger before breakfast felt fuller right after breakfast and long thereafter, compared to those that did not take the ginger supplement. It has been theorized that ginger improves leptin levels. Leptin is a compound that plays a role in feeling full and satisfied after a meal

It really works. I have tried it as a way to control my appetite, by drinking a cup of ginger tea before the meal. I will still be hungry but less ravenous, which means it’s easier to slow down, be mindful with every bite, which in turn makes you more aware of when you are full.

Ginger Suppresses Stress Hormone Production

Hormonal changes and chronic stress can spike your cortisol levels, which disrupts our metabolism and our finely calibrated mechanism that signals hunger and satiety. By balancing cortisol production, as research has shown, ginger helps protect this natural mechanism.

Ginger Improves Digestion

Researchers have theorized that poor nutritional absorption is partly responsible for not feeling satisfied after a meal. Your body feels like it needs more nutrients! By helping in the digestive process, you “get more” from the food you eat, plus you will have fewer annoying symptoms like bloating, cramps and heart burn.

How to Consume Ginger for Weightloss?

Ginger is extremely versatile and can be consumed in various ways.  While a simple ginger tea is an easy way to incorporate it as a weight loss supplement before meals, why not get creative and have fun with it, even outside of your daily meals?  Here is a refreshing ice tea recipe my partner Metta Murdaya for those balmy Summer get-togethers:

REFRESHING LEMONGRASS GINGER TEA RECIPE (by JUARA Co-Founder Metta Murdaya)

The weather is warming up, time to pop out the colorful glasses and get ready for outdoor cheer with friends! What easy to spruce up a party or a meal by upping the ante on the simple iced tea with this 2-ingredient charmer. The best part is you can make this in bulk and save it!

Great things come in pairs. Lemongrass and Ginger-a combination so happy together it’s like the Peanut Butter and Jelly of teas in Indonesia. Ginger’s signature spice is warming and familiar, while lemongrass is citrusy with floral/grassy notes-together they balance each other and create a flavor that is both comforting an rejuvenating-a winning combo.

To prepare your Ginger-Lemongrass happy-duo:

  • 2 stalks of Lemongrass, cut into pieces 3″ long (or approximately the length of your index finger.)
  • A generous handful of fresh ginger
  • Honey, brown sugar, or coconut sugar to taste

Slice the ginger into thin pieces and rinse until the loose skin pieces falls off and water runs clear. Slice the lemongrass pieces down the middle from top to bottom so it exposes the center and lets the aroma out.

Fill a pot with a quart of water, add ginger slices, lemongrass and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20-30 minutes. Note this recipe is loose in ingredient percentages as it can be adjusted to taste. For a brighter, citrusy note preference, add more lemongrass. For a heatier, hotter punch, add more ginger. The amount of water used can also be adjusted to taste.

Pro tip: Smash and pan roast the ginger pieces before slicing until the skin is dark. We do this in Indonesia as this process helps release the flavors and brings out the heat of the ginger. To decorate like we do in Indonesia, add a stalk of lemongrass to the beverage which can be used as a stirrer for the sweetener. Slip in a few pieces of the boiled ginger slices in the drink as well for that exotic and enticing look.

This tea can be served hot or iced, during a meal or after a meal for a nice digestive.

5 Minutes of Self Love

By JUARA Co-Founder, Metta Murdaya

February 14 is supposed to be a day of love, but really, wouldn’t it be great of it were all days of love? I personally think taking care of thyself comes number one – because from there we are in a better position to love others – and be loved. Often we take ourselves for granted and that “we can do it!” as we run through the day, attending to others’ needs, getting our job done, and the next thing you know, we’re too tired to even wash our face before passing out! (*Gasp* says the skincare line founder, moi.)

So – 5 minutes…It feels like forever when you’re waiting for someone to leave a parking spot, or like a second when spending it with a loved one about to board a plane. It’s all about what you make of the time. And if you think you’re worth it, then 5 minutes is almost nothing to spend each day – especially if broken out into small intervals. Try some of these 1 minute rituals and see what they can bring to your day. Do all or repeat what resonates with you 5x a day, or make up your own. (Then please share! I want to know what works for you!) I know that for me it helps me feel a little more grounded and glad.

Breathe.

This is clearly not an original suggestion, but still worth noting to practice. Taking 60 seconds of space helps clear your mind and ground you – allowing for the space to mentally regroup, reflect, and also re-oxygenate. I find that even smiling when I breathe (or even imagine yourself smiling if it’s less appropriate to be doing a solo-grinfest) helps lift mood. Counting breaths also help – believe it or not, I find it easier to count down vs count up if becoming distracted mid-count is an issue.

Say Those Three Words.

No, not I Love Me (hehe, of course.) Take a moment for a mini-reflection of your feelings or mood. State 3 words that describe how your feel. This small practice of being present and grounding yourself in the moment helps you feel clearer of mind, perhaps even ready to tackle what’s next. Even if the emotions feel negative, at least you’re aware of them and not just reacting to them, and constantly being reactive can feel very draining.

Mini Facial Massage.

We have many pressure points on our face – and some are easily accessible for low-maintenance self care. Using thumbs to give these points a firm-yet-gentle press can help release tension and increase circulation, which in turn also brings fresh nutrients from the blood into our facial area. I like pressing in on my temples for a few seconds and repeating a few times. Pressing upwards on the inner parts of my eyebrows, as well as across the cheekbones feels nice too. Doing gentle massage circles at the jawline and outside the side edges of your mouth is surprisingly relaxing – especially for those of you who grind your teeth, clench a lot, or well, talk a lot too. Give that jaw some TLC.

Spice It Up.

I like to have Ginger powder, Turmeric powder, and Cinnamon powder ready within reach in my kitchen. Take a second to add a pinch of spice into your anything you eat or drink, like cinnamon in your coffee, turmeric on your eggs, ginger in the stir fry – just a little smidge each day still gives health benefits and that special touch of gourmet. Because hey, we’re special.

Vibe Good Mojo at Someone.

Take a moment to think about someone you care about – whether in your daily life of someone you haven’t seen in a while, and why you’re grateful for their presence (or input) in your life. This should be a positive feeling. Then reach out (or make a mental note to), call, email, or even just text a hello. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. Studies show that longevity is correlated to having strong social bonds and connections, so taking a minute a day to reflect on your social bonds can be a reminder to keep investing in healthy friendships and living longer!

Happy Lovin’!

Sleeping Beauty: The Do’s and Don’ts of Skin Saving Slumber

Sleeping Beauty…

You may think that you have heard it all before, how important “beauty sleep” is and about getting seven to eight hours of per night blah blah blah. Maybe your schedule doesn’t allow you a super long night’s rest or you’re a night owl or early bird. Many of us just can’t get in the recommended amount of sleep, and feeling tired all day is definitely no fun.

But did you know that the sleeping position you choose can trick your body into feeling like it has gotten way more sleep than it has? So, stop counting sheep and try out these different sleep positions!

The Cold Hard Truth

Here at Juara we promise you the truth and nothing but the truth, so here it is: getting a good night’s rest is pivotal for not only our skin, but your health, mental state, and mood (you don’t want to be asked if “you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.”)

Below we have put together a list of the best and worst sleeping positions to help you optimize your hours of beauty sleep to stay healthy. Founder and editor in chief Helen Sanders of Health Ambition, (which provides easy to understand health and nutrition advice that makes a real impact,) has some great information on healthy sleeping positions too!

Your PM  Poses

1. On your back

Sleeping on your back makes it easier on the head, neck, and spine. This position aligns the body straight, keeping it in a neutral position. If you have lower back pain, sometimes it may help to place a pillow underneath your knees to alleviate the discomfort from being on your back for too long.

2.  Starfish

Another good position for your back, and prevents facial wrinkles and skin breakouts. Research has also proven that sleeping on your back can combat acid reflux. In the starfish position, you are lying on your back with both arms around the pillow. It is important to note that this position can cause snoring!

3. On your side

Sleeping on your side is the second best position and especially beneficial for those who have sleep apnea. Sleeping on your side opens up the oropharynx and elongates the spine to alleviate back pain (please include source and source link). However, there is a good and bad to everything! Side sleeping could lead to unwanted skin aging since placing one side of your face on the pillow can cause wrinkles, and could even lead to the breasts sagging quicker (and we definitely don’t want that!). If you are already a side sleeper and experience have back pain, try placing a pillow in between the knees to help alleviate pressure.

Your PM  Pose-Nots (aka the worst sleeping positions)

1. On your stomach

Sleeping on your stomach is not advisable since it does not support the natural curve of the spine and can lead to overarching. When you sleep on your stomach, there is added pressure to your joints and numbness resulting in pain.

2. The fetal position

It may seem like the most comfortable but sleeping on your sides with you knees drawn up to your chest can lead to neck/ back pain, sleep lines, and wrinkles. Whenever you sleep on your side, the side or front of your facial skin will be pulled or stretched. If you are sleeping on a high pillow, your head is slightly down and a double-chin gradually appears after a long time.

You sleep with your whole body, and the position you choose affects everything from sleep quality to premature aging. Sleeping positions are greatly related to Your skin (and body’s) metabolism is regulated at night, so making sure you get enough beauty sleep really does impact your beauty!

Beauty Maintenance 24/7

Don’t forget – we also experience evaporation of moisture from our skin when we sleep, so to look even more glowing and rested in the AM, the right skincare prep before bed can also do wonders. Let’s not neglect the evening hours are opportunity for skin TLC, treatment, and reset that may undo the damage from the day – especially when the concern is dehydration, pollution, or sun exposure! It’s important to make sure your skin is clean and moisturized before sleeping – and a to have a simple, easy to follow JUARA skincare ritual is always beneficial to undo the stressors of the day. A simple 4-Step to Cleanse, Tone, Treat, and Moisturize process that takes less than 5 minutes with visible results in the AM. Enjoy!

Summer Readiness – Here We Come.

Summer is the season for sunshine!  With beaches, dining al fresco, summer fridays (read: buh-bye office walls!), and generally being outdoors, you can easily be more prepared than you realize! You’ve heard repeatedly to never leave the house without sunblock, reapply several times a day (as its effectiveness reduces with light exposure, or just from coming off from sweat/daily activities), but there’s a few extra tricks up our sleeve to keep your skin summer fresh and healthy. Being inspired by Indonesia, a tropical country with sun all year round, JUARA knows what a doozy rays near the equator, eternal sun and humidity can do, so here’s our faves to tackle common sun related skin situations!

SUNBURN RESCUE:

Oops. Didn’t we say slather up the SPF? Well, it happens to the best of us… the sunburn. Sunburns are caused when skin is overexposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays and can happen in as little as 15 minutes, but can take 2-6 hours for the symptoms to appear. Some symptoms of mild sunburn include redness and tenderness, and for that, our Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner is a great skin soothing treatment. It contains rice bran extract, which specifically reduces redness and irritation, hyaluronic acid and tamarind see extract to moisturize and cool – without oil or alcohol, and triple tea extracts packed with anti0xidants. It really is instant relief. (For serious symptoms including blistering, fever, chills and nausea, we suggest going to the doctor!)

GREASE BE GONE:

Does summer weather and humidity put your skin into a tizzy? Does your skin range from “well, it’s rather shiny” to “a greasy mess?” Our Sweet Black Tea & Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer is oil-free, yet contains Kombucha, our anti-aging fermented black tea complex, plus ginger and cinnamon that reduces sebum production. This means the moisturizer does not only reduce oil-induced shine at the moment, but it also means that the more time you use it over, the less “shiny” your skin will naturally become!

Sweet Black Tea & Ginger Mattefying Moisturizer

Another anti-shine darling? Our Clove Flower & Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum. Also with our Turmeric infused Radiance Complex, this oil-free serum serves as excellent hydration with seaweed, while containing skin firming ingredients including palm peptides, clove flower, and goji berries. Like an exotic fruit cocktail for your face – just less messy, and way more immediate in its firming, skin-smoothing results!

JUARA Clove Flower & Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum

POST-SUN RESET AND REFRESH:

Once you’ve been exposed to a day of rays, it’s always good to refresh and rejuvinate your skin! Counter sun, travel, or pollution exposure with our Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask, which contains our potent Turmeric extract which neutralizes free radicals and brightens for a healthy “I am so HEALTHY!” glow. And we like to get our sexy natural radiance on – ready for the next day. This mask also contains Kaolin Clay is blended with Candlenut Oil to purify skin, absorbing impurities, while also keeping it moist and not overdried. Great for all skin types, just make sure you take it off when you leave the house because it just feels THAT GOOD on after 10 minutes! (Or just do what we do for a super treatment – apply a thin layer and leave on overnight. Wake up to the morning glow. Literally.)

And of course, we remind you to stay hydrated, make sure your sunglasses have a UV filter on them, try out a sun parasol if you’re feeling particularly stylish like some do in Asia, and keep smiling! Got any sun tips to share? We’d love to hear it!

All Weather Skincare – Behold!

I love the thought of all-terrain wear, like that windbreaker you take when it’s rainy, chilly or warm as a care-all layer, or the thin, big scarf you can bring to spruce up any outfit, while keeping yourself warm as needed. Perhaps it’s because as a traveling business owner I move around a lot, but I love multi-tasking items that can help me navigate through my everyday, preparing me for whatever is to come. From bouncing from tropical weather Indonesia to all-sorts-from-snowy-dry-to-hot-and-humid NY, I have to always be ready – so here’s my favorite weather-proof basic skincare from our own JUARA collection. (I can’t live without these!) You can always add more products, (like the moisturizer of choice,) but these are what I consider the most weather neutral essentials for all weather terrain!

JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser:

With its sulfate free cleansing agents, our new, greener, PEG-free formulations are gentle, remove makeup and leave a really soft after feel without stripping. This means for humid climates I get a nice clean without feeling stripped, which is perfect so it stays balanced without over producing oil to compensate. Interestingly enough, the same logic applies for dry weather, because that’s the last kind of weather where you want to strip your skin and render it more sensitive to the elements!

JUARA Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner:

I love this one because it swings both ways – as a hydrating toner in most climates to be applied before the moisturizer thereby improving moisturizer performance by sealing in this extra layer of moisture, or to be used solo – as THE moisturizer in more humid climates. I have often just used this alcohol free, water loving hyaluronic acid enriched toner solo and either skipped the moisturizer, or used a smidgen, just to have a thin layer on my skin as the humid weather substitutes as my moisturizer, keeping me hydrated. The tamarind seed extract is a chock full of oil-free moisture, Plus, no greasy after feel! AND if you’re in hot weather and give yourself a sunburn, this toner is a great skin-calmer, redness-reducing savior as the rice bran extract in it has properties to soothe and calm skin from inflammation and redness… which conveniently enough is also perfect for the drying cold wind of winter.

JUARA Clove & Flower Turmeric Anti-Aging Serum:

This firming and hydrating serum is PERFECT for all weathers. You do have to put a moisturizer over it, but the amount varies by climate. Alone, this oil-free serum helps tighten skin on application, and over time, the turmeric brightens the skin while the palm peptides and goji berry work to improve and even out skin tone and increase firm skin. The best part is it feels like a skin-shield – no matter how tired or sick I am, this serum helps me look awake and fresh!

JUARA Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask

I LOVE our masks. They’re like the “apply, fuggedaboutit, come back later and voila, see a difference” easy to use products. The Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask takes about a minute to apply, contains kaolin clay to purify and remove dirt in the pores but also candlenut oils to make sure it doesn’t dry out your skin. Plus, the turmeric is a naturally strong antioxidant to detox skin and also brighten – so it’s like 2o minutes to an instant glow, or apply a thin layer to leave overnight and in the AM it looks like you just slept like sleeping beauty – glowing and radiant.
