4 Fast Facts to Add Ginger to Your Diet!

 Ever since I learned that ginger is one of only a few spices that has proven anti-inflammatory benefits after consumption. I have been avidly trying to figure out how to add it, and it’s other anti-inflammatory spice friends into my cooking. Don’t like reading articles, watch this video. So let’s get to the point. Why is it exciting to add ginger to your food regimen?

1.It’s anti-inflammatory…

Not sure what’s great about being anti-inflammatory? It means that when your body faces stress or pain – ginger can help stop it. It’s been shown to be effective against osteoarthritis, muscle pain and soreness and even pro-inflammatory cancers like colon, ovarian, or pancreatic.

 

2.  It’s an anti-oxidant!

By now, we all know anti-oxidants help slow down aging or damage of our cells, but ginger’s 6-gingerol’s antioxidant ability is posited for being the reason ginger helps to slow down cognitive decline or even improve brain function in some.

3.  It can help with nausea, menstrual pain, stomach discomfort etc.

1-1.5 grams was shown to be as effective as medication against sea sickness, morning sickness, and pain from the menstrual cycle.

4.  It may be slimming!

Ginger activates the same slimming pathway as sleeping in a cold room or eating capsaicin in peppers. How cold? 62 F degrees cold. Cayenne pepper, like ginger, increases energy expenditure by activating brown fat tissue which helps to burn calories and thus lose weight.

Don’t get me started on the budding research showing ginger’s effects on diabetes and heart disease risk factors.

Convinced?!? Let’s do this!

Tips on how to use ginger…

  1. Crush it! Release the juices and increase the surface area. If you like the spiciness of ginger, but don’t want to eat it, take a large piece and crush it with the side of your knife, sharp side away from you of course. Then you can use the piece of ginger for soups, sautéing, etc. but fish it out since it’s still one big chunk.
  2. Add a chunk to your morning smoothie – wakes up your senses and potentially keeps that blood sugar down. My smoothie this morning: banana, apple, fingertip of ginger, strawberries, and kale with cold brewed hibiscus green tea and crushed flax seeds.
  3. Remove the skin with the side of a spoon. Then grate, julienne or mince it. Use it to make tea, spice up soup, add it to almost every stir fry, or brighten up anything sweet. Or try making ginger beer – a probiotic gingery drink!
  4. No fresh ginger? Or don’t want to bother with the root? (I buy mine in bulk and freeze it), ground ginger from the spice rack works too. Ginger tea is just 1/4 teaspoon with hot water, and a touch of honey.

It works!

Ginger Boosts Your Metabolism

Ginger is a spice.  If you notice how your belly gets warm after eating ginger, it’s not your imagination.  Ginger warms the body because it increases your metabolism, which is crucial for loosing weight and maintaining it.

Ginger Suppresses Your Appetite and Increases Satiety

A study by the New York Obesity Research Center and Columbia University showed that participants that consumed ginger before breakfast felt fuller right after breakfast and long thereafter, compared to those that did not take the ginger supplement. It has been theorized that ginger improves leptin levels. Leptin is a compound that plays a role in feeling full and satisfied after a meal

It really works. I have tried it as a way to control my appetite, by drinking a cup of ginger tea before the meal. I will still be hungry but less ravenous, which means it’s easier to slow down, be mindful with every bite, which in turn makes you more aware of when you are full.

Ginger Suppresses Stress Hormone Production

Hormonal changes and chronic stress can spike your cortisol levels, which disrupts our metabolism and our finely calibrated mechanism that signals hunger and satiety. By balancing cortisol production, as research has shown, ginger helps protect this natural mechanism.

Ginger Improves Digestion

Researchers have theorized that poor nutritional absorption is partly responsible for not feeling satisfied after a meal. Your body feels like it needs more nutrients! By helping in the digestive process, you “get more” from the food you eat, plus you will have fewer annoying symptoms like bloating, cramps and heart burn.

How to Consume Ginger for Weightloss?

Ginger is extremely versatile and can be consumed in various ways.  While a simple ginger tea is an easy way to incorporate it as a weight loss supplement before meals, why not get creative and have fun with it, even outside of your daily meals?  Here is a refreshing ice tea recipe my partner Metta Murdaya for those balmy Summer get-togethers:

 

REFRESHING LEMONGRASS GINGER TEA RECIPE (by JUARA Co-Founder Metta Murdaya)

The weather is warming up, time to pop out the colorful glasses and get ready for outdoor cheer with friends! What easy to spruce up a party or a meal by upping the ante on the simple iced tea with this 2-ingredient charmer. The best part is you can make this in bulk and save it!

Great things come in pairs. Lemongrass and Ginger-a combination so happy together it’s like the Peanut Butter and Jelly of teas in Indonesia. Ginger’s signature spice is warming and familiar, while lemongrass is citrusy with floral/grassy notes-together they balance each other and create a flavor that is both comforting an rejuvenating-a winning combo.

To prepare your Ginger-Lemongrass happy-duo:

  • 2 stalks of Lemongrass, cut into pieces 3″ long (or approximately the length of your index finger.)
  • A generous handful of fresh ginger
  • Honey, brown sugar, or coconut sugar to taste

Slice the ginger into thin pieces and rinse until the loose skin pieces falls off and water runs clear. Slice the lemongrass pieces down the middle from top to bottom so it exposes the center and lets the aroma out.

Fill a pot with a quart of water, add ginger slices, lemongrass and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20-30 minutes. Note this recipe is loose in ingredient percentages as it can be adjusted to taste. For a brighter, citrusy note preference, add more lemongrass. For a heatier, hotter punch, add more ginger. The amount of water used can also be adjusted to taste.

Pro tip: Smash and pan roast the ginger pieces before slicing until the skin is dark. We do this in Indonesia as this process helps release the flavors and brings out the heat of the ginger. To decorate like we do in Indonesia, add a stalk of lemongrass to the beverage which can be used as a stirrer for the sweetener. Slip in a few pieces of the boiled ginger slices in the drink as well for that exotic and enticing look.

This tea can be served hot or iced, during a meal or after a meal for a nice digestive.

 

Let’s Avocado All Over, Inside & Out

Did you know there are hundreds of types of avocadoes in the world, and that they’re actually a fruit, not a vegetable? And not are they just super tasty, but additionally extremely nutritious so here’s to a moment of celebrating an ingredient that we can all love and be creative with, as seen in cultures all over the world. Like in the US, they are super delicious as a guacamole – but in Indonesia, common uses include drinking them as a juice, and also putting it in your hair… Curious? Read on.

BASICS FIRST. WHY ARE THEY SO HEALTHY?

Avocados are a good source of pantothenic acid, dietary fiber, vitamin K, copper, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin C. They are are full of beta sitosterol, a chemical that has been shown to have a beneficial impact on the blood levels and helps reduce inflamation. Research shows that avocados are rich in oleic acid, which is a fatty acid associated with reducing the LDL (bad cholesterol), improving the ratio between good and low-density lipoprotein… all in, this is a super heart healthy fruit we should all enjoy!
The great thing about avocados is its ability to be utilized in a wide range of dishes. A simple sandwich with avocado and a little lemon juice sprinkled on top can be a fantastic snack and keep you feel full and satisfied for very long, and you can always enhance with anything from sundried tomatoes to hummus. Avocados are also a great addition to any vegetable salad. Make certain to include avocados in the daily eating routine. My dad makes it a habit to eat 1/2 an avocado every morning with olive oil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar to maintain his youthful 77 years young!

USES IN INDONESIA.

I like to think the centuries of its use has given us a lot of time to get creative with it…
IN A JUICE: Blend 1/2 an avocado with ice, water (or coconut water), 1 tbsp of condensed milk, and 1/2 tsp of instant coffee. Makes 1 cup. It has a sweet, delicious Avocado flavor with just a touch of a coffee aroma and flavor to make it a touch more aromatic and flavorful. For an decoration, you can squirt some chocolate syrup on the inside of the walls of a transparent glass cup before pouring in the juice for extra festive appearance! Here’s a fun recipe.

 

IN YOUR HAIR: Yes, seriously. In your hair. An avocado’s fats and rich texture makes for a great hair conditioning treatment and nourishes your scalp. In our traditional Indonesian “cremebath” treatment, you go to a salon to get a 45 min head, shoulder and arm massage (aka mini piece of heaven) while receiving a deep conditioning treatment with a natural hair mask. For dry skin, we use Avocado. You can make your own hair mask by mashing an avocado and mixing in an egg yolk if you have dry hair, or a banana if you have dull hair. You can give yourself a hair massage if you want then put on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse with water or light shampoo.

 

ON YOUR FACE: There are DIY masks, but then there is our Java Plum & Avocado Nourishing mask that has all the yummm without the mess. Nourishing avocado is mixed with skin firming Java Plum and mild fruit acids to smooth and hydrate skin in this leave-on mask. We love avocadoes for skin so much we decided to make a mask with it!

Deliciously Soft, Juicy Skin with this Quick & Easy DIY Mask

“OMG, you have to check this out, I can’t stop touching my skin!”  That was my chat message to my partners Metta and Jill, after I experimented with a new DIY face mask recipe to help with my winter-parched, rough skin.

I love to experiment when I cook.  No matter how specific a recipe is, I can’t help but tweak it somehow, even if in small ways, just to see what happens to the flavor.  Same thing with skincare.  I am constantly experimenting with products, not only with what I use, but also how I use them.  That’s how I stumbled across this easy and quick DIY face mask that left my skin soft, supple, almost juicy…simply yummy.

What makes this so easy is the fact that you are combining 2 actual products, JUARA Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner and Radiance Vitality Oil, with 2 readily available food ingredients:  brown sugar and honey.  This mixture together makes for a luscious treatment that polishes, hydrates and smooths skin immediately.  The toner is packed with hyaluronic acid, tamarind seed extract and soothing green tea, white tea and black tea extracts.  The face oil nourishes skin with 7 different omega fatty acids (3, 5, 6, 7 & 9) and Vitamin C.  Sugar acts as a polish but together with honey also acts as a wonderful humectant.  This recipe is so quick and easy, you can do this mask any time of the day, as a quick pick-me-up or as part of a relaxing ritual.

Ingredients & Directions:   

Brown Sugar  – 2 teaspoons

Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner – 2 pumps

Radiance Vitality Oil – 1 dropper-ful (not just 1 drop!)

Honey – Big Drizzle, 0r up to 1 teaspoon

 

Gather all ingredients.  Add all ingredients in a small glass bowl and mix with a spoon.  Add more of the ingredients to get the right consistency.  As the sugar starts to melt, it will become a slushy consistency, that spreads easily on the skin.

Apply all over face massage lightly in circular motion.  Leave on for 10-15 minutes.  I even leave it on for an hour or so, while I do all kinds of household chores and other work.  Rinse off with lots of tepid water and pat dry.  You can follow with a moisturizer for added dewiness, if you like.  For my normal to dry skin type, I usually don’t.

Ingredient Spotlight: Candlenut

Oh the Candlenut. Also known as Kemiri in Indonesian, Kukui in Hawaii, and a staple in food, beauty, and health treatments. Also known affectionately as “the poor man’s macadamia nut” in Indonesia, we love this ingredient for not only its variety of uses but the benefits it has! Here are some popular uses in Indonesia:

Beauty:

  • Crushed into bits, the soft candlenuts can create a beautiful exfoliating and hydrating scrub – the soft nuts gently slough off dead skin cells while the dry oils of the candlenut moisturize your skin at the same time.
  • Candlenut oil is an extremely popular choice for a deep conditioning/head massage treatment called the Cremebath, for making hair healthy and black, with a silky shine.

Food

  • A staple in Indonesian cuisine, Candlenuts are often cooked into curries, giving dishes a delicious, lightly nutty and savory flavor.

Health

Candlenut Oil  is very high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids (EFA).  In fact, the oil is 69% EFA, which puts it up there with Flax Seed Oil and Chia Seed Oil (71% and 70% respectively).  Almond Oil has 17%, Avocado has 10%, Rice Bran Oil has 36%, just to give you perspective. Why is this important?  Application of EFA is key in strengthening the skin’s lipid barrier which is why, for example, Evening Primrose Oil (81%) is often prescribed for Eczema Patients.

Turmeric in Sweets? Try these Delicious Blueberry Peach Turmeric Muffins!

We all know Turmeric from Indian, Thai and Indonesian food.  It gives curry its yellow color and adds a slightly bitter, mustardy flavor. Turmeric is also one of the most important Indonesian Jamu ingredients with all kinds of powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.  But sweets?  Absolutely!  After playing around with various amounts of Turmeric and fruit combinations, I went bold – voila, curry colored muffins that are fluffy and aromatic with beautiful pops of purple color and juicy peach.

What’s key?  Use whole wheat pastry flour instead of regular whole wheat flour to get a more delicate texture.  Buttermilk or Kefir ups the fluffiness factor.  Cinnamon and brown sugar adds depth while also balancing the assertiveness of Turmeric.  And lots of real butter….butter makes everything in life better… Enjoy for breakfast, brunch or afternoon tea.

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/4 Whole Wheat Pastry Flour

1/4 Oat Bran

1/4 Flax Seeds

1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp Baking Soda

Pinch of Salt

1 tbs+1 tsp Turmeric Powder

1 tbs Cinnamon

1/2 cup+1 tbs Brown Sugar

1/2 cup+ 1 tbs Butter, melted

2/3 cup Kefir or Buttermilk

2 eggs

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

1 Banana, ripe and mashed

1 cup Peaches, chopped (canned peaches ok)

1 cup Fresh Blueberries (frozen Blueberries seep too much juice and alter the curry color)

 

DIRECTIONS:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and line a muffin tray with muffin liners.

With a hand mixer, combine brown sugar, butter, buttermilk and vanilla extract until smooth.  Add eggs and mix until smooth.  In a separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients, spices and salt.  Add the dry combination to the wet mixture while continuing to blend with hand mixer.  Once the mixture is smooth and fluffy, add mashed banana and mix well.  Put away hand mixer and carefully fold in chopped peaches and blueberries.  Fill muffin cups and bake 20 minutes.  Insert a toothpick into a muffin.  If there is no dough stuck to it when you pull it out, the muffins are done.

We’ve been hearing about this super food for months, but what is it? A powder? A root? A magical health elixir?

So, let’s start with the basics. What is turmeric?

Part of the ginger family, turmeric is a native plant to southeast India. Turmeric is most popularly used in two forms: raw and dried. Turmeric has been used for almost 1000 years in cuisine, medicine, makeup, skin care, and clothes dying.

What can turmeric do for my skin?

Turmeric, with its anti-inflammatory and redness reducing properties, can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including eczema, allergic hives, and even chicken pox! Turmeric is also a great treatment for acne, as it is both anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory (not to mention anti-oxidant and anti-neoplastic) (Vaugh AR. et al. Are there any side effects of ingesting or topically applying turmeric?

There are no known side effects for applying turmeric directly onto the skin. When ingesting turmeric, however, it is important to remember that turmeric is a blood thinner. 5 Principles of an Effective Core Skincare Regimen

“Regimen” may sound restrictive and boring, but a consistent daily regimen is in fact your skin’s best friend.  Like with anything in life, a consistent regimen tells you over time what’s working and what needs change because it gives you a solid benchmark to start from.  In that way, it not only helps your skin, but it also helps you to get to know your skin better.  How to get started?

Select 4-5 products for daily use that provide a solid framework for your skin type and address your top concerns.  You can add extra treatment products, like masks or special items, once you feel comfortable with your core and confident that you will stick to it AM and PM.  Here are the key elements and principles in a great core:

1. Cleanse:  Gentle is King

A good cleanser removes dirt and make-up without stripping skin.  Feeling refreshed is good.  Feeling “squeaky clean” is overkill.  When you strip your skin of its own natural lipid barrier, it’s hard to add it back through product. With a good cleanser, your skin should still feel comfortable and not taught for a whole minute or so after cleansing and before applying a moisturizer.

2.  Tone: Focus on Hydration and Skin-Friendly Ingredients

All skin types, including oily skin, can get dehydrated.  Dehydration means that your skin is lacking water and can result in fine dry lines, irritation and redness.  Look for a toner with water-binding ingredients, like Hyaluronic Acid or Tamarind Seed Extract.  It will plump skin and keep it soft and supple while also making your moisturizer more productive.  Avoid irritating and drying ingredients like alcohol.

3.  Treat: Commit to an Antioxidant-Rich Serum

Antioxidants help prevent premature skin-aging and can even reverse existing signs of aging, such as dullness, lines and wrinkles, large pores and loss of firmness.  They also improve redness and other signs of stress.  Serums, which are highly concentrated formulations, are great ways to provide skin directly with an extra dose of antioxidants and nutrients.  What specific ingredients to look for?  Botanicals rich in antioxidants include Turmeric, Clove Flower, Indian Gooseberry, Tea Extracts, Goji Berry and Kombucha.

4.  Moisturize:  Enhance and Balance 

Whether you have dry or oily skin, the point is to help your skin reach and maintain a healthy balance.  If you are dry, choose a moisturizer that enhances and helps rebuild your skin’s own lipid barrier with ingredient that are rich in essential fatty acids, phyto-sterols and/ or ceramide (e.g. Candlenut Oil and Rice Bran Oil).  If you are oily, look for ingredients that help purify pores, reduce shine and balance sebum-production (e.g. Ginger, Cinnamon).

5.  Protect Daily

Whether you prefer a straight sun screen, a moisturizer or foundation with built-in protection, or a protective powder, consistency is key.  Look for a minimum of SPF15 for daily use and make sure it provides broad-spectrum (meaning UVB + UBA) protection.

Recipe Spotlight: Turmeric Eggs & Tamarind with Brussels Slaw

One of my favorite jamu (herbal tonics) from Indonesia is the Kunir Asem. It is a combination of Turmeric and Tamarind blended in a superjuice (as I like to call it) with water, lime, a pinch of salt and palm sugar (or agave/honey.) Together, turmeric and tamarind together have a positive effect on your digestive system and helps fight inflammation in your system. But sometimes I don’t feel like making up a beverage – it’s not so convenient, but I know what is – breakfast. And brunch. We all enjoy it so why not combine that Indonesian grassy spice of turmeric and the tangy sweet flavor of tamarind fruit in our everyday routine? Make the exotic accessible in this easy to make recipe I created this weekend on my own leisurely brunch – and for sure I’ll be making it again!

Scrambled Turmeric Eggs with Tamarind Sauce – Serves 1.

Ingredients:

2 eggs

3 tablespoons of milk

1 clove garlic, finely chopped (or garlic powder as a shortcut)

2 big pinches or 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder

pinch of sea salt

generous crack/shakes of black pepper (helps turmeric be more bioavailable and easily absorbed by the body)

coconut oil (to heat in the pan, plus it’s good for you and turmeric is also more effective when mixed with a fat/oil)

Optional: Add a 1/2 teaspoon of Garam Masala or Everyday Spice mix (from Trader Joe’s or of your choice)

1 teaspoon (or more, to taste) Tamarind Sauce/Tamarind Chutney found in the Asian/Indian section of supermarkets. Often the sauces are pre-made, great for dips, sauces or condiments.

Scramble the eggs, milk, garlic, turmeric, salt and pepper (and optional spices) together. Heat coconut oil in a pan to medium, and scramble the eggs until fluffy and cooked. (You can always vary by making it into an omelette and adding spinach too).

Brussels Slaw – Serves 1:

3-4 Brussel Sprouts, raw, finely chopped

1 tsbp pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

1 tbsp Olive Oil

Juice of 1/4 Lemon

Sea Salt & Pepper to taste

Optional: Add baby kale or chopped cucumber for additional greens or crunch

Blend all ingredients together and serve. Add more lemon juice, or any other ingredient to flavor the brussel sprouts to taste. This is supposed to be a clean, light and fresh salad to complement the richer flavor and softer texture of the scrambled eggs.

How to serve: Plate the scrambled eggs on a plate, and top with tamarind sauce. Surround the eggs with a ring of brussels slaw. Enjoy the delicious texture combination and healthy flavors together!
