Deliciously Soft, Juicy Skin with this Quick & Easy DIY Mask

“OMG, you have to check this out, I can’t stop touching my skin!”  That was my chat message to my partners Metta and Jill, after I experimented with a new DIY face mask recipe to help with my winter-parched, rough skin.

I love to experiment when I cook.  No matter how specific a recipe is, I can’t help but tweak it somehow, even if in small ways, just to see what happens to the flavor.  Same thing with skincare.  I am constantly experimenting with products, not only with what I use, but also how I use them.  That’s how I stumbled across this easy and quick DIY face mask that left my skin soft, supple, almost juicy…simply yummy.

What makes this so easy is the fact that you are combining 2 actual products, JUARA Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner and Radiance Vitality Oil, with 2 readily available food ingredients:  brown sugar and honey.  This mixture together makes for a luscious treatment that polishes, hydrates and smooths skin immediately.  The toner is packed with hyaluronic acid, tamarind seed extract and soothing green tea, white tea and black tea extracts.  The face oil nourishes skin with 7 different omega fatty acids (3, 5, 6, 7 & 9) and Vitamin C.  Sugar acts as a polish but together with honey also acts as a wonderful humectant.  This recipe is so quick and easy, you can do this mask any time of the day, as a quick pick-me-up or as part of a relaxing ritual.

Ingredients & Directions:   

Brown Sugar  – 2 teaspoons

Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner – 2 pumps

Radiance Vitality Oil – 1 dropper-ful (not just 1 drop!)

Honey – Big Drizzle, 0r up to 1 teaspoon


Gather all ingredients.  Add all ingredients in a small glass bowl and mix with a spoon.  Add more of the ingredients to get the right consistency.  As the sugar starts to melt, it will become a slushy consistency, that spreads easily on the skin.

Apply all over face massage lightly in circular motion.  Leave on for 10-15 minutes.  I even leave it on for an hour or so, while I do all kinds of household chores and other work.  Rinse off with lots of tepid water and pat dry.  You can follow with a moisturizer for added dewiness, if you like.  For my normal to dry skin type, I usually don’t.

If you can read this, I am assuming you are a very busy person. We all have responsibilities—a job, a home, maybe kids- perhaps ALL THREE – and don’t get me started on all of the new shows waiting for you on your Netflix queue. Life in the modern age takes up a lot of time and energy, and of course, things like focus. Lucky for us in 2016, we don’t need a lot of that just to look good. So if you find yourself alone with a little time one evening, you can make your skin look like you have all the time in the world to pamper it. Self-Care: It’s Starts with an Attitude.

When people think of JUARA, they think of a calm, exotic and tropical destination, with Indonesian spas that rejuvenate your soul just by thinking about them. On one hand, it is all true – the centuries old ancient healing and wellness tradition does sound serene, on the other, the JUARA office in New York City is anything but.

Don’t get me wrong – as an entrepreneur, I LOVE my  job. I have an inspired team, motivated to do our best because that’s just how we are. Plus, we live in NYC, not exactly the slowest city in the US. Combine a passionate team, a crazy work ethic, and the constant challenges we, as an independent brand, face in the sea of corporate giants, and voila – it’s like a dry bale of hay one lit match away from the bonfire of burnout. We all have our limits, and our secret to giving it our all without burnout is all in the integrated habits of self-care we practice at work, inspired by the Indonesian belief that beauty is about balance between inner peace and outer beauty to achieve harmony.

Maybe peace and harmony isn’t exactly synonymous with living in NYC, but we can strive for BALANCE. It starts with an ATTITUDE of wanting balance. We CARE about our sanity – so with frequent checking in with ourselves, we can do what we need to do to keep our cool and energy levels high. Benefits are improved productivity, and basically, even if you leave work tired, you’re not drained, and ready for anything after!

Quickie things you can do to hit that mental balance stride when the brain heats up to “overload”:

  • Step out for a breather, do some stretching exercises at the desk or give yourself a JUARA hand massage (always a treat!) The point is keep the blood moving, shake it out, and breathe. Breathing gets more  oxygen into your bloodstream and moving helps the oxygen carry through the body. Plus a change of scenery gives your mind a break.   • Crack a joke to the team, be silly, make a funny. Share the humor – one time someone spontaneously posted a ridiculous cat meme on the stressful production schedule wall and it was a source of chuckles all day. My business partner couldn’t get an 80’s power ballad out of her head, so by the end of the day, she made sure NO ONE else could either. Laughter is contagious and so is positive energy.
  • 1-3 minute meditation. Focus on relaxing your mind and on your breathing alone. Most of us can hold our breath for one minute – it’s not THAT long. But it’s enough to calm your mind (when you breathe, not hold hold it!) Meditation can trigger your parasympathetic nervous system which is what is responsible for feelings of relaxation and calmness so there is definitely a scientific reason as to why it works. TIP: For newbies, just close your eyes, count down 10 slow, deep breaths, and to keep your mind from wandering, just pay attention to the air flowing from your nose over your upper lip as you inhale and exhale.
  • Indonesian Spa Tip: Give yourself a quickie head massage. Spread your fingers wide but curved like claws (minus the nails), so that the tips of your fingers press down on your scalp, and run your 10 fingers with pressure from the forehead to the back of the head. With your thumbs, press into the base of your head where it meets the neck and massage with small circular motions, while still pressing down with your fingers. And breathe. Just do three times – you’ll feel the difference!

Give Yourself a Stress Check


This week is national stress buster week, and boy do I need a stress check.

Do you ever wake up at 5am in a panic thinking that it’s 9:30 and your alarm didn’t go off and you overslept and missed a meeting? That’s been happening to me the past few days, which means I need a SERIOUS stress detox.

Stress is like a pimple on the back of your neck. You kind of feel it when it starts, and over the next week it grows and grows until one day you’re wearing your hair up in a ponytail and your best friend looks at you and goes “OMG what is that on the back of your neck??? It’s really infected!”

And at that point you just have to pop it. Pop it, disinfect it and allow your skin to heal.

So this week, it’s time to pop your stress pimple, detox your life and allow your anxiety-ridden brain to heal.

Here are the three stress busters I’m implementing to help me chill the hell out this week:

1. Buy An Alarm Clock


My morning ritual goes something like this: wake up in a panic at 5:30 thinking my alarm didn’t go off, check my phone, think “it’s only 5:30, phew”, proceed to check my email JUST INCASE someone sent something important between the hours of midnight and 5:30am, put my phone back in the charger, roll over and go back to sleep, repeat twice more until my alarm goes off (reliably) at 7:45am.

Instead of relying on my phone to wake me up, I’ve decided to buy an alarm clock. By putting the clock next to my bed, I can quickly glance up and realize that it is in fact only 5:30am and proceed to go back to sleep. Keeping my alarm separate from my phone also reduces the temptation to check email in the middle of the night or from bed first thing in the morning. It also allows you to turn your phone off (read, OFF as in powered down) overnight which 1. keeps your sleep from being disturbed by constant buzzing and dinging in the middle of the night and 2. gives your phone a rest… because electronic devices deserve sleep too.

2. No Email Before 9am or After 7pm

In this world of constant communication, everything has become an ’emergency’ and if you don’t answer NOW the world is going to fall apart. Let’s all take a step back, breathe, and realize that if someone sends you an email at 11pm, it PROBABLY isn’t actionable until 9am the following day anyway. So why do we all drive ourselves crazy and leave our email notifications on all night? Turn that stuff off when you go home, and you’ll feel far more refreshed and ready to tackle the day when you get into the office in the morning. I promise.

3. Take A Lunch Break Every Day


I am a serial lunch-at-desk crime committer. Every day I walk outside for 5-10 minutes to grab my food and then immediately come back to my desk to continue working. I don’t know why I feel that this is necessary… I am clearly allowed a lunch but I just don’t take it. And neither does anyone else I know! WE ARE ALL CRAZY. If you have an hour for lunch, take that hour to do things for you. Eat outside, run errands, watch funny videos online, call your mom… just do anything other than work. It’s important to set boundaries for yourself to maintain a healthy work-life balance. And eating lunch at a normal, human pace is a good start.

Asian Kale Salad Recipe


Kale is a fantastic superfood that is chock-full of nutrients, including vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, copper etc. Get your daily dose of kale with this spicy spin on the traditional salad!


-4 cups of chopped kale

-1/2 cup of cilantro

-2 green onions, thinly sliced

-1/2 cup of chopped, roasted almonds

-2 tablespoons of seasoned rice vinegar

-1 teaspoon of sesame oil

-Any additional veggies/dressings of your choice! Pick from:

  • Sriracha
  • Chili flakes
  • Lime Juice
  • Soy Sauce


-Combine all veggies and toss in a salad bowl

-Add sesame oil, rice vinegar and dressing of your choice and continue tossing

-Add your choice of toppings and voila!
