One of the most effective skin care ingredients may be in your kitchen’s spice rack. Turmeric is a deep orange root derived from India, where it’s a commonly used spice in many dishes. BY: ERIN LUKAS | www.instyle.com

These are just a few of our ideas – got any of your own?
Those of you who like long airplane flights, raise your hands. My guess is yours probably isn’t raised. Over the last few years, as the busy entrepreneur, I’ve been doing the global commute from New York to Jakarta up to 6x a year for not just JUARA research, and but also to build up our JUARA Indonesia office which we expanded to two years ago.
Unfortunately, with the growth and expansion of business also comes the stress and weary-eyed look of frequent travel. These long-haul flights are no joke – 24 hours, including transit, which means 24 hours of movies, limited legroom, and more recirculated air than I’d care to breathe. Exit flight, and enter jet lag and very confused skin. (All you flight attendants who do this all year round, I admire thee!) All in all, in Indonesia, I’ve gotten dengue, typhoid, and numerous fatigue induced aches and pains. In New York, I go from tropical wonderland to allergies, city pollution, and wildly different weather. In fact, I’m taking turmeric pills (with some fats like omega oils or a teaspoon of coconut oil to help make it more bioavailable), and royal jelly to maintain calmer nerves and a stronger immune system to keep up.
Sounds exhausting? It is. But do I love it? Absolutely. And my skin and health? Let’s just say people keep asking if I’m in my early 30’s, and the real number is a decade up. How I manage? Here are some habits I’ve developed that I recommend to anyone who has a heavy travel or run-around schedule – whether it’s commuting 10,000 miles, or just 10 miles.
1. For international travel, you may have heard it’s best to arrive in the daytime and stay busy/out until the local bedtime to faster adjust to local time. This is true. In addition, and this is a little unorthodox perhaps, since there is a 12 hour time difference from Indonesia to NY, I stay up the night before so I sleep soundly on the plane (if you can,) and secretly I feel I’ve outran jet lag w/ a 24 hour head start. This also makes a 24 trip feel shorter.
2. Water – inside and out. Stay hydrated before, during, and after the flight. Drink water, but also stay moisturized on the plane ride – recirculated air is not thy friend. If you don’t like to wash your face on the plane or put a cream on, take our oil-free Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner (in put in a travel bottle, since no cotton ball needed) and splash on frequently. It’s like an Evian water spray or a traditional facial mist, but better since it contains hyaluronic acid and natural tamarind seed extracts to bind moisture to your face and triple tea extracts that act like antioxidants.
3.Make plans – I try to have something scheduled that’s fun to do after I arrive to the destination; the psychological motivation to do something enjoyable does wonders to motivating you to stay awake when jet lag creeps in.
4. Use masks to speed up skin recovery – My skin revolts after a long, exhausted trip, and sometimes it takes days for it to return to normalcy. I speed up that process by double-dosing on my treatment masks. After I cleanse, I use the Rose & Willowbark Blemish-Free mask to exfoliate and clarify skin. Then I follow with the Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask to purify further, detox. Together, my skin returns to a healthy, soft, smooth, even-toned state. Follow with moisturizer. Do this combo 2-3x a week for a week. Trust me, it works.
Do you have any tips on surviving frequent travel? I’d love to hear them and learn!
There’s a whole library of great natural ingredients from Indonesia (and beyond), and Turmeric has been hot in the news (finally!) In addition though, I wanted to focus on a special combination we mix in Indonesia, and how to use them to boost your own health and beauty – both inside and out! The beauty of Jamu, our natural herbal health tradition, is that we focus not on one ingredient, but how several can be blended together to have special benefits as a whole blend than the parts if taken separately.
Turmeric: Used widely in curries around the world and a staple of Indonesian health tonics, turmeric is a root with powerful antioxidant properties. Turmeric is known to be a liver and blood detoxifier, has strong antibacterial and internally cleansing powers, and can be used to treat illnesses from cancer to Alzheimer’s. The effect of turmeric is also said to be improved when mixed with black pepper (or pineapple works too.) In Indonesia, it’s one of the key ingredients not only in health tonics, but also used in a poultice for topical application for healing wounds, and in spa treatments to purify and give skin a beautiful glow.
Tamarind: Tamarind can be both eaten and used topically with many benefits. It has topical anti-inflammatory antioxidant properties. When eaten, it can help with digestive problems, can help lower cholesterol, and can be a mild laxative. It contains fiber, potassium, magnesium and other vitamins. It’s shaped like a giant pea pod with a hard shell and has a soft, sticky, chewy fruit inside with hard seeds. When applied to the skin, the seeds have strong hydrating properties, while the fruit has antiseptic and astringent properties. It tastes tangy and sweet, is commonly made into a candy, or used in soups and other savory dishes that one can easily forget all its additional health benefits.
Kunyit Asem: Drunk as one of many popular daily health tonics (called Jamu) in Indonesia, it’s a solid, go-to beverage for women to improve overall well being and energy levels. Made of a combination of Turmeric, tamarind, flavored with sugar (or honey) with a pinch of salt, it should be drunk fresh. Pour over ice, and it’s really refreshing. There are prepackaged versions you can buy at the store, some add the betel leaf, commonly included in Indonesian beauty products and beverages to refresh the breath and improve overall body odor. I have made some from scratch, read the article of Jamu I made in Bali on Well & Good NYC here.
So let’s do the same for your skin!
JUARA’s Turmeric and Tamarind Skin Boosting Duo. Use this to to supercharge your skin. After cleansing, use the Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask twice a week. Its antioxidant powers strengthen and detoxify the skin; plus it has a brightening power that will give you an instant, radiant glow. The turmeric is infused in a non-drying mud mask that also purifies skin and refines pores. It’s a great skin recharger – like hitting reset on your face’s health button.
Follow up with the Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner (which should be used daily, even if not using the mask.) This cottonball-free toner-serum is a skin quenching step that takes just a few seconds. Tamarind and hyaluronic acid work together to deeply hydrate skin, replenishing lost moisture to give skin an instantly soft and supple feel, while antioxidants from tea and redness reducing powers from rice bran extract add extra skin-calming benefits. Follow with your favorite moisturizer, (or we recommend the Kombucha infused Sweet Black Tea & Rice Moisturizer), and see the difference!
If you can read this, I am assuming you are a very busy person. We all have responsibilities—a job, a home, maybe kids- perhaps ALL THREE – and don’t get me started on all of the new shows waiting for you on your Netflix queue. Life in the modern age takes up a lot of time and energy, and of course, things like focus. Lucky for us in 2016, we don’t need a lot of that just to look good. So if you find yourself alone with a little time one evening, you can make your skin look like you have all the time in the world to pamper it. With the right JUARA products, you can give your face a full boost in under 30 minutes and still have plenty of time to make a big dent in this season’s House of Cards.
Make Magic in Under 30 Minutes
If you do only one thing for your skin, exfoliation is a must. Not only is it key to a glowing visage (light reflects better off an
even surface), it’s the one step that makes an immediate visible difference. Remember you are not scrubbing the bathroom floor here, this is your face we are talking about, so gentle is key. The Radiance Enzyme Scrub is a 2-in-1 scrub and enzymatic peel that utilizes superfine bamboo and jojoba beads to delicately smooth the complexion. Loaded with natural fruit enzymes that dissolve all those dulling dead skin cells, your face will be brighter and luminous from the very first rinse. Gently massage the scrub on damp skin and leave it on to let the enzymes go to work. Within 3 minutes—you don’t need to leave it on any longer, we have things to accomplish here—it leaves behind only clean, luminous skin, sans any irritation. If you think you can’t tolerate exfoliators, this product will change your mind.
We still have time, so you will want to pamper your freshly revealed skin with an extra boost of TLC. The Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask harnesses the proven antioxidant power of Indonesian turmeric- for your face. Think of turmeric as a miracle ingredient- boasting both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, this godsend will soothe and brighten. Gone are the days of those tingly, mint colored clay masks from high school that left you red and parched. You’ve graduated on to bigger things. The soft clay formula of the mask detoxifies and strengthens skin without any of the harsh drying effects. Simply smear on a layer, kick back for 10-15 minutes, and you’re one step closer to radiant.
Time is running low, but don’t panic, we’re almost done. After rinsing the mask, remove any residue (there shouldn’t be) and tone with the Tamarind Tea Hydrating Toner. This was created to go beyond a traditional toner and offer more of a treatment (which it is). A blend of white and green teas offer antioxidant benefits and hyaluronic acid plumps up the skin with the first swipe of the cotton pad. Think of it as the pre-gamer to this skin care party. Now follow immediately with a moisturizer. More specifically, the Radiance Vitality Oil. Why? A few drops of this silky hydrator contains 12 (yes, 12) powerful oils that multi-task to moisturize, revitalize, and protect all of that hard work you just put in. Did I mention the added Vitamin C leaves you noticeable firmer? Now pat on a single pump of the Miracle Tea Complete Eye Cream to send those weary eyes packing, and come tomorrow your friends will want to know all of your skincare secrets. Who says there isn’t time to look good?

We love to drink tea at JUARA. Although we had all grown up drinking different types of tea, few of us knew much about tea beyond the fact that it can have caffeine and has healthy antioxidants that help skin and body fight age-inducing free radicals. We’ve also all heard that tea can prevent cancer, calm the stomach, improve immune function, decrease cardiovascular risk, etc.
But did you know that tea comes from only 1 plant – the Camellia sinensis plant and that the different types of tea: White, Green, Black, Pu-erh, and Oolong differ based on the amount and type of processing each tea undergoes? All “teas” that come from other plants are “herbal teas” – but tasty nonetheless.
Indonesia is home to a rich tea culture, an inspiration to our JUARA products. In fact, JUARA co-founder Metta grew up drinking a beverage called “Tehbotol,” which literally means “Tea in a Bottle.” Tehbotol was – and is – the popular everyday beverage in Indonesia like Coca Cola is to the US – but just much healthier, with its delightful jasmine aroma from the sweet black tea.
Varieties of Teas
- White (air dried buds, natural oxidation): Silver needle
- Green (air dried leaves processed by steam or wok-fire, natural oxidation): Hojicha, High mountain tea
- Black (rolled leaves, fully oxidized): Keemun, Darjeeling, Pekoe, Ceylon, Breakfast
- Oolong (partially oxidized by baking for different flavors): Tie Guan Yin, Oolong
- Pu-erh (cave-aged large-leaf, better with time, classified by age and region – like wine!): sheng (green/raw) types, shu (ripened/cooked)
The beauty about the caffeine in tea is that it doesn’t create that “crash” that so often happens with other caffeinated beverages, it’s a smooth and energy lifting awareness. A typical serving also has far less caffeine because tea is brewed more “weakly” than coffee. Plus, color is NOT an indicator for caffeine content.
Tea Beverage Variations
A little bit of tea leaves goes a long way. You can brew tea with the same tea leaves multiple times, just add hot water on the first steep, and pour your first cup after a few minutes and immediately refill with hot water.
- If you like it sweet but watching blood sugar levels, try agave. Agave doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels (thus preventing the sugar high and crash) and
- Honey is naturally immune-boosting, especially Manuka honey, and the higher UMF, the better. (Mine is UMF 10+. The UMF grading system appraises natural markers found in Manuka Honey to assures purity and quality.)
- No milk? Try soy milk, almond milk, any sort of milk really.
- Metta’s herbal Tea no-sugar “sweetener” hack – add a stick of cinnamon when brewing your herbal tea. Not only is cinnamon good for regulating blood sugar, it adds a sweet aroma which may make for a nice substitute that adds “just the right sweetness touch.”
- And sometimes, when you’re tired of the millions of teas we have in our cupboard, mix teas. Chai with herbal mint tea. Herbal antioxidant Rooibos with black tea. Choco-mint with Thai Chai.
So let’s drink to your health!
Note: If you don’t feel like drinking tea, the antioxidants area also great when applied to skin. JUARA has excellent anti-aging products which utilize the power of Kombucha tea, and Tea extracts here!
