Creating a Zen Work Environment



That’s a word we throw around a lot. “I’m feeling so stressed.” “My office is so stressful.” “I think I’m picking up on your stress.” It’s all around us in a seemingly unavoidable way.


But stress is dangerous.

Did you know that stress is the number one silent killer? Stress strains the body and mind, allowing other illnesses to creep in. Stress leads to insomnia, breakouts, heart problems, high blood pressure… the list goes on.

So how do we zap stress from our lives?

Most stress feelings start in the workplace, where the average American spends more than 1/2 of his/her waking hours each day! The best way to de-stress our lives is to de-stress our offices, and we’ve got a few fun ways (and fun accessories) to help make that happen.

1. Create a Drama Free Zone (Etsy Custom Design)

Whether you’re in a corner office or a barely-enough-room-for-a-chair cubicle, there is some piece of your workplace that is for you and you alone. Make that a safe space free from office drama. If a problem needs to be discussed, set up a time outside of your office to talk about it. Rent a conference room, grab a coffee, just get away. Keep your space stress free.

2. Stop Complaining ($42 Etsy)

Complaining breeds contempt, so stop doing it. At least not in the workplace. Sometimes things won’t be as awesome as you’d like them to be, but try not to let that outwardly affect your attitude. If you choose to take a positive view on the challenges you’re presented with, it will be MUCH easier to tackle them head on!

3. Go Outside ($165 Kate Spade)

Even if it’s for 10 or 15 minutes, go outside. Get out during your lunch break, take a walk around the block, and breathe some fresh (questionable if you live in a major city) air. Feeling trapped inside all day will DEFINITELY increase your stress level, and it can even make you less productive.

4. Close the Garage Door ($19.99 Amazon Prime)

In our office, when someone needs quiet time to work or think they say “My garage door is closed” aka “Please don’t talk to me right now.” Setting boundaries for yourself and your coworkers is vital to productivity, and the more productive you are during work the less stressed you’ll be after hours.

5. Set a Lunch Date ($18 Amazon)

If you are given a full lunch hour, take it. At least when you can. It’s important to be social during the day… just not when you’re trying to get your work done. Taking an hour to clear your mind and spend social time with your coworkers or friends (if they work nearby- no one says you can’t meet your friends for lunch!) is a great way to break up your day.

6. Remember – You Love What You Do ($14.95 Etsy)

And if you don’t, you should do something else. We spend more time at work and with our coworkers than we do with our friends and loved ones, so if you don’t love what you do you should look for a new career. Work should be fun! It will also be hard and trying and stressful at times. At the end of the day if you love and believe in what you do, it’s not all that bad.
